Homes are rarely just bricks and mortar. They are long-imagined dreams, carefully saved-for plans, and often the backdrop to the most important chapters of family life. At Caullystone, it is these stories — and the people behind them — that shape every design..

This feature will remain pinned as an evolving journal of the practice’s work: a place to introduce new projects as they take shape, revisit completed homes and share news, insights and guidance about the design and planning journey. Consider it both a window into current work and a celebration of collaborations past.

Established in 2002 by Jonathan Bavin the practice has always remained intentionally small. That scale is not accidental; it is fundamental to the way the studio works. Clients deal directly with Jonathan from the first conversation through to completion, creating a sense of trust and continuity that larger practices often struggle to maintain. Architecture here is personal.

And the scope is broad. From the addition of a welcoming porch to the reimagining of an entire property, from light-filled extensions and clever loft conversions to bespoke new builds and characterful barn conversions, Caullystone embraces the full spectrum of residential design. Garden annexes for growing families, sensitive refurbishments, contemporary coastal homes and even apartment schemes or blocks of flats — each project, regardless of size, receives the same thoughtful attention.

One of the qualities clients often remark upon is the absence of a recognisable “house style”. There is no repeated formula, no signature flourish imposed from above. Instead, each design begins with a blank page. The client’s lifestyle, aspirations and practical needs lead the process, resulting in homes that feel deeply individual rather than branded.

Design is treated as a shared journey. Clients are encouraged to be actively involved in shaping their home, supported with clear advice and open communication throughout. From early sketches and feasibility discussions to planning applications and on-site decisions, the experience is intended to feel collaborative and reassuring.

Jonathan’s Postgraduate background in Ecological and Environmental Engineering further enriches this approach. Sustainability is not an afterthought but an integral part of the conversation — whether considering orientation and energy efficiency in a new build or improving performance within an existing property.

With longstanding knowledge of local planning policies across Cornwall, Devon and the South West and strong relationships with trusted builders and consultants, Caullystone guides projects smoothly from concept to completion.

At its heart, this is a practice built on relationships. The homes showcased here — whether modest alterations or ambitious multi-unit schemes — are the result of close collaboration and a shared vision. And as new projects unfold and past ones are revisited, this space will continue to reflect what matters most: architecture shaped not by trend, but by the people who call it home.
